Jackass Journalism
25 October 2007Don’t blink! You might miss it. Just in case, another blogger captured it for ya.
Bobby Caina Calvan (I copy/pasted the name because you wouldn’t want to misspell the name of someone so self-important) of the Sacramento Bee struts around like a rooster, telling the story of how he put down The Man in The Green Zone. Then he gets some feedback from his readers and realizes he acted more like a weasel.
BLACKFIVE, Ace of Spades and LGF have more details than does Foghorn Leghorn himself.
Personally, my favorite bit comes from Uncle Jimbo at BLACKFIVE:
The arrogance of newsboy would have rapidly shifted to fear and then panic if the soldier had not been a professional. Unlike the jackal, the soldier has standards and is duty bound to absorb the noxious ventings of his lessers. He will stay his hand and accept that the punk he tolerates has no clue even why it might matter that the soldier IDs him. He is a sheep pissing on the leg of the sheep dog and telling him it’s raining.
While you’re reading, be sure to check out McClatchy Watch which seems to have been the first to bring attention to this “professional” journalist.
Getting the 404 at Calvan’s blog? Wonder what happened… surely he’s not ashamed of his behavior toward the man assigned to protect him from those who would just as soon see him dead as report on The Evil Occupiers.

Thanks for the link.
I’ve also posted some emails I exchanged with him, where he seems genuinely contrite, but then he took down the entire site.
I also posted an email defending him from someone claiming to be a colleague, from the SacBee server, so maybe its legit, who knows.
Anyway, thanks for linking.

I find Bobby Calvan’s blog post to be disrespectful and insulting to the brave men and women who are in harm’s way. His behavior toward that soldier was reprehensible and then to gloat in such a public display demonstrates a lack of professionalism, deccency and class.
But what goes around comes around. As a means of pressuring Mr. Calvan and his employers into publicly apologizing to the soldier who was the recipient of the brow beating, I have registered the domain http://www.bobbycalvan.com and have posted Mr. Calvan’s blog entry in its entirety as well as replies and more importantly, the contact information of his employers at The Bee and The McClatchy Company.
You can help the Bobby Calvan apology campaign by posting the http://www.bobbycalvan.com link on other message boards. I’m not receiving any monetary gain, just saw an opportunity to make a point for only $10 and took my shot.

If you have story ideas or thoughts you’d like to share with Mr Calvan he can be reached at bcalvan@sacbee.com. One can only imagine the amount of work and pressure he is under and as such he may not be able to respond to each and every one of your emails.
In case of such an event, you can direct your thoughts and story ideas to the conglomerate that employs Mr. Calvan. I am certain they will pass along your comments and questions. Operators are standing by.
