Man Tasers Carjacker, Gets Shot 5 Times
7 November 2007Here’s an important news bulletin: Don’t Bring A Taser To A Gun Fight!!!
Man Tasers Carjacker, Gets Shot 5 Times
An Atlanta man was shot five times when he used a taser to fight off a carjacker.Officials said the incident happened Wednesday afternoon on Forest Park Road near Conley Road in southeast Atlanta.
Police were called the scene after receiving a call that a man armed with a gun jumped into the victim’s van and told him to drive. Police said the victim gave the man money but at the same time, he tasered the man. Officials said the man then shot the victim five times.
The van crashed into a tree after the incident and the gunman fled. Police are still looking for him.
Officials also said it is not a good idea to use a taser against someone armed with a gun, especially in a confined area.
Well, DUH!! We’ll be praying for the quick recovery of this victim. At the same time we’ll also be hoping that his unfortunate experience will help teach people that when you get ready to defend yourself, a gun and some training goes a lot farther than a taser…

this man is my brother in law and heres an important thing to remember…. the athorities didnt even give all the detalis the guy shot him right off the bat when he jumped in the car so he was fighting for his life and it doesnt matter how he defended himself he is alive in the hospital in intinsive care but alive thats better than dead and nobody can say that it was a wrong decision because the guy told him to drive and that when he got where he was going he was going to kill him he did what he thought was best he didnt have a gun and didnt know that someone was going to jumo in the car with him.he was shot 5 times in the stomach but thats alot better than 5 times in thre chest or head hes got along road to recover and to get back to normal life but atleast hes alive to be with his wife and 2 kids and his family and we are very thankfull for that.and he was being shot and fighting off the guy while trying to drive and he is alive so dont go taking dirt when u dont know the situation because the media didnt know the whole story

ekkclay,
First I would like to say that I am very thankful your brother-in-law is alive and recovering. I did state quite clearly that we are praying for his quick recovery. I will continue to do so, and to pray for you and your family as well.
My main point, however, still stands. If your brother-in-law had been armed with a firearm, and had known how to use it, this asshole carjacker might well have been taken off the streets permanently and your brother-in-law might be in much better shape than he is.
I’m not saying he didn’t do the best he could to defend himself under the circumstances he found himself in. The fact that he was willing to fight back and try to stay alive says a lot about his courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. He has a lot to be proud of.
That said, however, I would have to guess you would agree with the fact that he COULD have been much better prepared if he had been armed and ready for an incident. At least then the odds would have been more in his favor.
My main point is that we should all learn from this tragic incident! Of course he didn’t know someone was going to jump in his car and try to carjack him. Nobody knows when something like that might happen! We should all be as prepared as we can be, and a taser just doesn’t cut it, as your brother-in-law tragically learned.
As for the media not telling the whole story, the story I linked to states quite clearly that your brother-in-law tasered the man AND THEN was shot. It even goes so far as to quote the police as saying that it isn’t a good idea to taser someone who has a gun on you. I find it highly unlikely that the carjacker got in the car, shot him 5 times, and then told him to drive. Is that what you’re saying happened? Had he already been shot when he tasered the guy or did he taser him and then get shot? Either way, it would have been better if he could have shot the guy back instead of just tasering him, and that is the point.
If that isn’t what really happened, as you state, that still doesn’t really change my main point here. Be prepared for the worst!
God Speed to you and your family. I hope and pray your brother-in-law makes a rapid and complete recovery. And I hope that everyone else who reads this, including you, will see the value of being armed and prepared for the worst. It could have turned out much differently than it did, and I hope that everyone reading this story understands that. BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST, PEOPLE!!

I know this is almost a year later and no one may care at this point, but the man that was shot is my husband. What the news report got wrong was that he had been shot 3 times already before he grabbed the taser. He figured at that point he didn’t have much to lose fighting with all he had. He was shot 2 more times in the struggle. He would have NEVER used the taser first against someone with a gun. The boy (he was 15 which makes the whole situation even sadder)shot my husband before he was even all the way in the van.
Just for an update, he has recovered well and the boy is currently sitting in jail and will be there for quite a while.
If my husband had had a gun, yeah, he might have been able to shoot this kid, but it still would not have kept him from getting shot. The point that the gentleman made about being prepared for the worst is a good one, but I don’t know that carrying a gun is the answer. Locking your doors everytime you get into your car, however, is a real simple thing you can do. If my husband had done that, thing would have turned out very different that day.
