Oh, Dr. Laura. You fell into the trap.

6 September 2008

It is unbelievable to me, in this day and age, that people still think that it is any of their business which parent stays home to take care of the children. But here comes Dr. Laura, a woman I respect, (and recall bringing her son to the studio with her – I am assuming there was no one at home with whom he could stay, but perhaps she just liked having him there) joining the chorus of successful business women who believe Sarah Palin has no business occupying the White House due to the fact that she has young children.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Palins have such a supportive partnership? No one with young children can run a 2,000 mile snow machine race multiple times without support, and Todd Palin seems to have been supported by his wife and extended family. Does Dr. Laura also believe that Todd Palin should have put his racing dreams on hold because of the age of his children?

It just isn’t anyone’s business what kind of arrangement the Palins have in regards to their children. I would imagine that if we are facing a showdown with Russia and Piper has a fever, a Vice President Sarah Palin would confront the Russians while Todd Palin consults with the doctor.

There is another aspect of this that is just incredibly insulting to Governor Palin and to my intelligence. The Palin children would not be the first young children to grow up around the White House. The difference between the Palins and the children who came before them? The Palins would be the first First Children whose mother, and not father, was the reason they came to Washington. No one, to my mind, questioned whether Dan Quayle should not have accepted the nomination in 1980 because he had a 2 year old daughter.
